When he met with Holdaway later at the station he’d almost got himself back together. He smiled as he told his intensely abbreviated version of the night’s events. He babbled about the drive, the dinner and then the hotel. He didn’t mention the kiss, just lit a cigarette and apologized.
“Couldn’t close the deal, man, I’m sorry. He chickened out at the last minute. I never got anything evidential out of him.”
“Nothing evidential, huh?” Holdaway laughed. “Shows how much you know.”
“What do you mean?”
“I mean, call your mother and tell her you ain’t coming to visit for a long time. You’re going undercover, Freddy, for real this time. This Larry guy just introduced you to Joe Motherfucking Cabot.”
